Short Info About Vodafone Idea

VI: How a Merger of Equals Became a Struggle for Survival

Due to the availability of the Internet on handheld phones, the world is seeing drastic changes. However, it would not be possible without the telecommunication companies that put many years of hard work into ensuring that every corner of the country gets connected to the Internet. Vodafone Idea Ltd. is one of the many companies in India that is working towards achieving the vision of digital India.

March 1995: Birla Communications Ltd. was incorporated.
May 2002: The company’s name was changed to Idea Cellular Ltd.
February 2007: It was listed on the Indian stock market.
August 2018: Vodafone India was merged into it.

Its existence credit can be given to the 4G war that happened in the Indian telecommunication sector. To be well equipped to face the cash-rich companies, Vodafone India and Idea Celular merged to give birth to a new entity, i.e., Vodafone Idea Ltd. It has divided its business into personal and business categories. Under business, it provides services, such as enterprise mobility, connectivity, security, Internet of Things solution, etc.

The company has won several awards for its excellence in customer service, network quality, innovation, and social responsibility. Various indices have it as its constituent, such as Nifty 200, Nifty India Digital, etc.

Due to tough competition, high licensing fees, huge debt, and frequent innovation in the industry, its share price has remained in the red for a long time. Let’s go through the historical share price of Vodafone India Ltd. to see how a business with a good outreach doesn’t mean value creation for the investors.
