Maruti Suzuki India Ltd: Driving India’s car revolution.
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL), formerly Maruti Udyog Limited, started as a joint venture between Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan and the Indian government. It was founded in 1981 and listed on the NSE in 2003. It is part of the Nifty 50 index.
In 2003, the government of India started selling its stakes to Suzuki Motor Corporation and ultimately exited the company by 2007.
Maruti Suzuki has a car for every Indian, from its entry-level models like Alto to premium hatchbacks like Baleno and Swift, sedans like Dzire and Ciaz, and SUVs like Vitara Brezza and S-Cross. It has different channels for different kinds of products, like it sells new cars through ARENA and NEXA channels, Pre-owned/Used cars via TRUE VALUE and Maruti Suzuki Commercial for commercial vehicles.
One of the major events that shook the company’s share price was the labour unrest at its Manesar plant in 2012, which led to a lockout and a production loss of over 83,000 units. The company’s share price plummeted by over 30% in three months, from Rs.1,315 in May 2012 to Rs.915 in August 2012.
