TITAN: How Titan Company Became a Titan of Indian Lifestyle Brands

Nowadays, everyone has a smartphone to check time, but there was a time when watches were considered a luxury and how people cared for their phones today in the same way people used to care about their watches. Titan Company Limited saw a huge business opportunity and started manufacturing watches. It is one of India’s most admired and respected companies, with the added trust of TATA.

1984: Titan Watches Limited was incorporated.
1993: The company’s name was changed to Titan Industries Limited
2013: The company’s name was changed to Titan Company Limited.

The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation and Tata Group created a joint venture; thus, Titan Company Limited was incorporated. It started operation in 1984 and is currently a part of several prominent indices.

Once Titan captured a good portion of the watch industry, it forayed into various other sectors, such as jewellery, eyewear, perfume, etc. Over almost 4 decades, it has transformed India’s watch and jewellery industry. It has shaped India’s retail market by pioneering experiential retail.

As the company kept making its name amongst the people, the same thing was also reflected in its stock price. Considering the stock price appreciation, stock split and bonus shares, Rs. 10,000 invested in August 2002 in Titan would have grown to more than Rs. 16.9 crores.
