HDFC Life: Journey of becoming a leader amongst private insurance companies.

Most of the time, when people start a family, they become aware of the unpredictable nature of life and choose some life insurance products to protect their family’s future. HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd. has made its name among private life insurers.

A sector that was closed to private players till the end of the century when it opened gave rise to many private players. HDFC Life took advantage of it & in just over 2 decades, it reached a market capitalisation of ₹1,47,263 crore. It was the first private life insurer to obtain registration from the IRDAI.

August 14, 2000: HDFC Life Insurance Company was incorporated.

October 23, 2000: The company obtained its certificate of registration from IRDAI to undertake the life insurance business.

June 20, 2011: Incorporated HDFC Pension as a subsidiary.

November 17, 2017: Launched IPO and became a listed company.

It was promoted by erstwhile Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited and Abrdn (Mauritius Holdings) 2006 Limited, a global investment company. After implementing the Scheme of Amalgamation of HDFC Ltd. with HDFC Bank, India’s leading private sector bank, the Bank has become promoter of the company in place of HDFC Ltd, effective July 1, 2023.
