BHEL: The Powerhouse of India’s Energy and Infrastructure Sectors

Electricity is a vital resource needed for the industrial development of any country. Many pieces of equipment are required to harness electricity from various sources. Considering such link between electricity generation and appropriate equipment, the Government of India established Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, which was first formed for setting up and managing the three plants of Heavy Electricals (India) Limited.

August 1956: Heavy Electricals (India) Limited HE(I)L was incorporated.
November 1964: Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) was incorporated.
January 1974: HE(I)L and BHEL were merged.
November 2003: It got listed on the National Stock Exchange.

It is an Indian central public sector undertaking with a presence in 88+ countries. It is also given the status of Maharatna in India, which is given to only 12 companies.

It has shifted its business model from revenue-based to project-based, which is also visible in its projects in various industries. It is present in power, renewables, transmission, railway transportation, water management, e-mobility, etc.

Various indices have it as its constituent, such as the Nifty 500, Nifty PSE, etc. It also contributes to society through various Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives such as providing aid during disasters, adoption of villages, rainwater harvesting, etc.
