Coal India Limited (CIL): The World’s Top Coal Producer
CIL is a public sector enterprise under the Indian Ministry of Coal. It was established on 14 June 1973 by nationalising the coal mines in India. The aim was to plan, conserve, develop and ensure the safety of this crucial resource. CIL made history on 4 November 2010 by becoming the first PSU to list on the NSE. It is also part of several indices like NIFTY 50, NIFTY NEXT 50, NIFTY METAL and NIFTY ESG 100.
CIL has a diversified portfolio of businesses and products, such as mining, power generation, coal liquefaction, coal bed methane, refining and coal-to-liquid. It operates in 84 mining areas across eight Indian states. It has subsidiaries and joint ventures in South Africa, Bangladesh and Mozambique. CIL has won many awards for its excellence and innovation, such as India Today PSU Award for Best Global Presence, the Dun & Bradstreet Corporate Award for Mining Sector and Golden Peacock Award for Corporate Social Responsibility.
One of the major events that influenced CIL’s share price was its IPO in October 2010. The IPO was a huge success and raised around Rs 15,200 crore, making it the biggest IPO in India then.
