SBI: From Imperial Bank to a global leader in financial services.
Have you ever heard of India’s oldest and largest bank by network coverage? State Bank of India, a public sector undertaking, is serving a large population of India through its vast network of branches.
1921: Imperial Bank of India was incorporated.
1955: It was nationalised and renamed to State Bank of India.
1993: It was listed on the Indian stock market.
In the first decade of the 19th century, the roots of the State Bank of India started sprouting in India through the Bank of Calcutta. Later, by amalgamating 2 other banks with it, Imperial Bank of India was formed. The Government of India took control of it through the State Bank of India Act, 1955 and renamed the Imperial Bank to State Bank of India.
