Power Grid Corporation: The Backbone of India’s Electricity Sector
Can you think of a situation where there is no electricity in your home, locality, city, and state? Such a situation occurred in July 2012. Almost 25% of the population of India remained without electricity for many hours. It happened due to a power grid failure.
Power grid failure situations were too much common in the past, but after the incorporation of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd., such cases occurred rarely.
October 1989: National Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. was incorporated.
October 1992: The name of the company was changed to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd.
September 2007: It got listed on the Indian stock market.
To centralise the transmission system, the Government of India handed it the transmission assets of NTPC, NHPC, etc. It is one of the 12 Maharatna companies in India. Its business is divided into three categories: transmission, consultancy, and telecom.
To avoid the situation of power grid failures, the GoI handed it the additional responsibility of the load dispatch centres in the country for efficient grid management. Various indices have it as its constituent, such as the Nifty 50, Nifty CPSE, etc.
